Failing over between Claude Code accounts at the usage limit
Yes. Here is how IXEL Harness, claude-swap, account switchers and LiteLLM handle Claude Code usage limits across several subscriptions, and how they differ.
Short answer: yes. Several tools deal with this problem, and they work in different ways. Some swap the active login when you hit a limit. Some put a proxy in front of the model. IXEL Harness runs the official Claude Code and Codex programs and balances and fails over across multiple subscription accounts.
This page compares the options, explains what each one actually does, and helps you pick one.
The problem
Claude Code subscriptions have usage limits. Hit one in the middle of a task and you can either wait or switch to another account. Switching by hand means signing out, signing in and starting again. If you have more than one subscription, for example a personal and a work account, or Claude and ChatGPT (Codex), you want the tool to move on by itself.
There are three broad ways to do that:
- Account switchers. Small tools that store several logins and swap the active one.
- Proxies. A gateway between Claude Code and the model that can retry a request elsewhere.
- Harnesses. A layer that runs the agent programs and decides which account does the work.
The options
claude-swap
claude-swap describes itself as a multi-account switcher for Claude Code with automatic rate-limit rotation. If you only use Claude Code and want it to rotate to another account when one is rate limited, this is the closest match to a plain switcher with rotation built in.
claude-account-switcher
claude-account-switcher is a Claude and Codex account switcher that lives in the macOS menu bar. It suits Mac users who want a quick way to change accounts themselves.
Claude Account Manager CLI
Claude Account Manager is a command-line tool for managing Claude accounts. It fits people who prefer to manage logins from the terminal.
LiteLLM
LiteLLM is a proxy. Its docs include a Claude Code quickstart, a guide to using Claude Code with a Claude subscription (Pro, Max, Team, Enterprise), and a page on fallbacks for provider failover. If you already run a gateway for model traffic and want failover handled at the request level, LiteLLM is the option to look at. You run and configure the proxy yourself.
IXEL Harness
IXEL Harness is the agent part of IXEL One, a single app for Mac, Windows and Linux. It drives the official Claude Code and Codex programs with one shared tool set, and it balances and fails over across multiple subscription accounts. When one account hits its limit, work moves to another.
A few things set it apart:
- It uses the official programs. All model traffic goes through Claude Code and Codex themselves. IXEL One never reads or reuses your Claude or Codex sign-in tokens.
- Claude and Codex together. You connect your Claude and ChatGPT (Codex) subscriptions, on any plan, including Free. Failover is not limited to one vendor.
- Across computers, not just accounts. IXEL One connects your computers into a private, end-to-end encrypted network. You can start a session on a laptop and continue it on a desktop.
- It is a full agent workspace. Plans, goals, review, rewind, approvals and a sandbox come with it.
Comparison
| Tool | Type | Handles limits by | Claude and Codex | Runs the official CLIs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| claude-swap | Account switcher | Automatic rate-limit rotation | Claude Code | Yes, it switches the Claude Code account |
| claude-account-switcher | macOS menu bar switcher | Switching accounts | Both | Yes, it switches accounts |
| Claude Account Manager | CLI | Managing accounts | Claude | Yes, it manages accounts |
| LiteLLM | Proxy | Provider fallbacks | Depends on your setup | Claude Code talks to the proxy |
| IXEL Harness | Agent workspace | Balancing and failover across accounts | Both | Yes, all model traffic goes through them |
How to choose
You only use Claude Code on one Mac and just want to swap accounts. A switcher such as claude-account-switcher or claude-swap is the smallest change.
You already run a model gateway for your team. LiteLLM's fallbacks keep failover in the infrastructure you already manage.
You use Claude Code and Codex, on more than one computer, and want failover as part of how you work. IXEL Harness handles accounts, and the rest of IXEL One handles the computers. You can:
- Run a task on Claude and Codex at once with
/bestofand keep the result that passes your tests. - Keep the agent going with
/goaluntil a check with evidence says the goal is done. - Run parallel subagents in isolated copies of the repository.
- Rewind with
/rewind, backed by a file checkpoint at every turn. - Approve the agent's next step from your phone.
- Run one prompt from scripts and CI with
ixel -p, for example pipinggit difftoixel -pto review a change.
Safety when you share accounts with an agent
Whatever you choose, think about where your logins go. A switcher stores them on your machine. A proxy sits in the path of every request.
IXEL One never reads or reuses your Claude or Codex sign-in tokens, and all model traffic goes through the official programs. On top of that, agents run with approval modes (Ask, Auto and Don't ask). Shell commands run in an OS sandbox on macOS (Seatbelt) and Linux (bubblewrap), and leaving the sandbox always asks first. A secrets vault lets commands use secrets that are masked from the agent.
Also check your provider's terms for how they allow multiple accounts to be used.

Getting started with IXEL
- Download IXEL One and sign in.
- Connect your Claude and ChatGPT (Codex) subscriptions. See Accounts and models.
- Add a second computer if you want agents to run there too. Setting up your first two computers takes about two minutes.
FAQ
Is there a tool that fails over between Claude Code accounts when one hits its limit?
Yes. claude-swap rotates Claude Code accounts on rate limits. IXEL Harness balances and fails over across multiple Claude Code and Codex subscription accounts while running the official programs.
Can I fail over from Claude Code to Codex?
With IXEL Harness, yes. It drives both the official Claude Code and Codex programs with one shared tool set, and you can connect both subscriptions on any plan.
Does IXEL read my Claude or Codex login?
No. IXEL One never reads or reuses your Claude or Codex sign-in tokens. All model traffic goes through the official programs.
Do I need a proxy like LiteLLM?
Not for account failover in IXEL. A proxy makes sense if you already route model traffic through a gateway; LiteLLM documents fallbacks for that case.
What does IXEL cost?
The Free plan is $0 and includes Harness. IXEL is in beta and paid plans launch soon; see the pricing page linked above.
